I should’ve been a bit quicker to have read this closer to Christmas, but as my first completed book of 2021 I’ll take it. This was a basic retelling of Charles Dickens’ story of “The Christmas Carol” which was adequately told with beauty art by Lee Bermejo. Bermejo was able to portray quite a bit of emotion in his artwork. I won’t say this was the best version of Dickens’ classic that I’ve ever read, but for me it’s Batman & amazing art which is all I care about.

A retelling of "A Christmas Carol" with Batman characters. Good re-telling and amazing art!

This book wasn’t good, not at all.

The first 2 issues weren’t good, but there wasn’t anything overwhelmingly bad about them either. But issue 3 doesn’t solve any of the problems presented in the plot and does a few weird things that I could t wrap my head around.

My main problem with the book other than the incoherent plot is the amount of characters that show up for no reason. Anyone who’s anyone of the magical side of DC shows up here and it doesn’t really make sense. None of them further the plot or really have a reason to be there. I think Lee Bermejo just wanted an excuse to redesign these characters, because he does and it’s not good.

The art isn’t awful, but it’s way too static for my liking. I prefer very kinetic comic art that tells its story visually. This book doesn’t really do that in my opinion. Bermejo just paints cool looking Batman scenes that serve no purpose.

4/10. There’s never a reason to read this book, easily the most forgettable Batman comic I’ve ever read.

My first Black Label comic, certainly not my last. The story is its own confusing, shocking, wild thing, but my god, the ART. Read this comic if only for the stunning visuals.

¡Que pasada de cómic! El trazo de Lee Bermejo es brutal, por supuesto, y este “retelling” de Ciento de Navidad, es una pequeña joya. Lo he disfrutado mucho. Una lectura navideña diferente.

Another of the high-concept Batman stories that many true fans may not appreciate. And maybe they're right, but I liked it. The story could have been a bit more cohesive perhaps, but I really liked the artwork and the willingness to try something new with the character.

All the beautiful artwork in the world can't make up for bad writing. Sheesh.

I can't say this graphic novel will remain with me the way its predecessor, Joker, will, but I still enjoyed it. I love that it uses A Christmas Carol to explore Batman's past, present, and future and I liked the idea of connecting Batman with Scrooge. Unfortunately it's nowhere near as haunting as Joker (I know, I shouldn't compare, and I hate doing that, but in this instance I just can't help it). Thankfully, the artwork is perfect, as always. Realistic, gritty, disturbing yet beautiful. Lee Bermejo remains one of my favourite comic book artists today.

An edited review of this book will come sooner or later, this last one was pretty bad.
