this book is a cinderella-like story that is enjoyable enough, but it was also written by an English writer in the 1938 and we all know what they were doing over there during that time so antisemitism, sexism, racism and xenophobia is present. Miss Pettigrew thinks it's better for her friend to get married with a man who says she "needs a little physical correction" because god forbid she marries with an italian who is kind but "not fit to be in the presence of a white woman"

Very of it’s time - written 1938. Two derogatory mentions of the word Jew to describe someone negatively which would never be allowed today nor, I suspect, within 7 years of the book being written as just prior to WWll

Is in the style of Mrs Dalloway (1925) by Virginia Woolf, the whole book being focused on 24 hrs in the life of one woman. This is more lighthearted however and no World War One references.

Very quick read. Well written. Tidy ending, no loose ends. Not much in the way of plot but not that kind of story.

A sociological look at class and society typical of the time. Would read again probably.

Not as fast as it might be, considering the action takes place over one day and is entirely madcap adventure. A charming but dated read.
