I am so relieved to have finally finished this book. It took months for me to get through it. The only reason I stuck with it is because I already paid for it. This story does not become interesting until the final quarter. Needless to say, I will not read it again, and I would not recommend it to anybody.

I had forgotten how terrific a writer Patchett is between when I read Bel Canto and when this came out, so I unfortunately waited a long time to get around to this one. Don't make my mistake. It would take James Cameron millions of dollars and hours of CG work to make you feel like you're in the middle of the Amazon; Patchett does it with just words on a page.

Came quite soon after Bel Canto so some comparing went on.
Medical research aspect led to some discussion. Amazon descriptions were generally liked. Some found it dragged on. Ending unconvincing.

It's a bit troubling how many of the characters are little more than cartoons -- most especially Dr. Swenson and Mr. Fox (ugh, Mr. Fox).

audiobook note: Hope Davis' performance is utterly absorbing -- nuanced in a way that the narrative itself might have been. The third star in my rating is entirely credited to how her reading elevated the story experience.

I would probably rate the first 250 pages of this book a 2+, but the last 50-75 pages were a 4.
