Robin Hobb is such a master writer. As I found with the first book the pacing was slow, but something about Hobb's writing allowed me to luxuriate in this rather than craving more action. And please do not take this as a sign that her works are boring. They are far from it. They simply take their time, building layers and sowing seeds so that the payoff is all the more worthwhile in the end.

The world building is expertly done, with the Six Duchies and the magic system feeling so well crafted, but for me, it is the characters that really made Royal Assassin. They are each so distinct, and flawed in a way that makes them all the more loveable. The standouts in the book were most definitely Nighteyes, Kettricken, the Fool, and even Molly - who I gather is not a particularly popular character 😅

I cannot wait to rejoin Fitz and his friends in Assassin's Quest and to see this first series in The Realm of the Elderlings wrap up. I imagine it is going to be nothing less than epic.

I am emotionally destroyed. Oh, Burrich my beloved. Oh darling Fitz! Patience and her ditziness and adoration. Kettricken, who I so dearly want to befriend.

Not often do I actually cry during a book but Burrich weeping onto Fitz… that finished me off.
