I really liked reading this one from Marco’s perspective. It gave a different outlook on being able to morph. The not so glamorous side and how it is not all fun and games. It definitely added a reminder to hey these are just kids having to deal with these situations. That reveal at the ending though... I did not expect that!

In this book Ax decides that he's going to create a Yeerk distress call, capture a Yeerk ship and fly back to his home world. Unfortunately the Yeerks suspect the distress call is a trap, and capture Andalite Ax, elephant Rachel, hawk Tobias, gorilla Marco and tiger Jake. They're transported to the Yeerk mothership up in orbit, where Marco learns that his mother is the human host of Visser Three's superior, Visser One. Vissers Three and One are at odds with each other, and Visser One's army helps the kids escape so as to make Visser Three look bad. Back on Earth it's the two year anniversary of Marco's mother's supposed drowning, and Marco's dad finally grows up and decides to get back on his feet.

This has definitely been my favourite book of the series thus far. From the moment the author mentioned that Marco's mother's body had never been recovered, I knew she was involved with the Yeerks somehow. I'm guessing they made their way to Earth (I still have no idea how they got down there in the first place), infected her and then staged her death. I don't think she sounds like one of the saps that volunteers as a host.

I also loved this book because Ax is such a total spazz. The scenes at the beginning where he's trying out words and freaking out about his newfound senses of taste and smell were hilarious. :3

Animorphs, a children’s book, has some of the best body horror out there. Also one of the best uses of intentionally deceptive cover art I’ve seen in a series. Everyone knows the iconic animorphs covers but this one was more than that. Good trick.

I’m consistently impressed that KA Applegate was able to come up with so many creative uses of animal morphing and increasing the stakes every book.
