Why oh why. Things were going so well. Hate the fact I only seem to complain in reviews, that endings either make it or break it for me. This probably would have been more of 4 star or a 4.5 star if this had a different ending.

I just swear if Emrys
Spoiler turns into some kind of a god in book 2 or something and he lets it be and doesn't do anything to stop I don't think I'll be able to read it. I know this Emrys was never projected as some 'good guy' ever in the book, his vary nature and existence, even if its just a means to survive probably wouldn't be seen as 'good' to many people. But I guess this book just made me like him— and I really don't want him to become some sort of false God for the people. I know he was made out to be one of the better souls eaters, that he actually had a conscience and could feel empathy.

Hope he can bring some sort of salvation nonetheless to Providence he and Galen have some sort of happy future together.

Once I started this book I couldn't put it down, it draws you right in from the get-go. The characters are beautifully complex, each with their own agenda and intrigue abounds among them. The worldbuilding is excellent, setting the scene well without overloading. It does leave some questions unanswered, such as what led to the humans of the world hiding in underground arks, but it also doesn't feel relevant. Not knowing this did not in any way detract from the story.
The book kept me on my toes and right up until the end you don't really know what's going to happen next, there's always some surprise or other around the corner.
I enjoyed this book immensely and am excited for the next instalment in this series
