i don’t think it’s fair to say this book is racist against iranians. while no one can paint all people of the same race with the same brush, betty is entitled to tell her story as it happened. it has been proven to be accurate by various sources, and while details the horrible truths of irianians that did her wrong, she certainly also speaks of those who helped her, who saved her life and allowed her to live to tell her story.

The story is worth reading and worth telling. I just wish that the author’s disdain for Iranians and their culture wasn’t as forefront and underscored as it in during the first half of the book. While she has clear and definitive reasons to dislike those who partook in her imprisonment, during most of the first half of the book and then less so throughout the rest of the text, she makes pointed vocabulary and tone choices that disparage the Iranian culture almost wholly.

I almost DNFd the book about 40% in but pushed through because I really wanted to know her story.
