The fantastical elements of this manga are its strength, but it’s creepy elements (like the mangaka’s inclusion of “traditional punishment” and graphic pictures) are hugely triggering and disturbing, no matter the audience. I think this clears up for the most part after this volume of the manga, since I’ve watched most of the anime that’s already out for it, and I know what to expect story-wise, but I hope for my sake and others that no more drawings like this pop up.

Update: I flipped through a couple more volumes and they have more pictures like it.

Nope. I’m done. Avoid this manga.

Notes

I’m not sure what is meant when Ozen says, “If only I had left you there, that kid would’ve come with me. Such a pity I did what I did.”

Wow. I’m just glad the series continues to be great, not that I doubted to deeply. There’s the sad portions of Riko being taken by the corpse-weeper bird, that teary fight between Ozen, Reg, and Riko, and the great resolution and amazing flashbacks Ozen has of Riko’s mother. I believe a book is great when I stop to imagine myself in its world of behaving similar to its characters, and this volume did just that. I wonder if this qualifies as a five star feeling, but I don’t think it’s quite like that of the Devilman ending feelings I felt, but regardless, great series this is. I’ll rate at three and a half stars, with this from the first half being about the abyss decent but still like-able abyss decent, but the great liking part being the second half of the Ozen training and flashback. I almost wish to rate the entire book at four stars, and I think I will. Yes. I will. Holistically together, I’ll rate at four stars. It’s an enjoyable read from start to finish, and the later half is amazing. I suppose 3.75 if we’re to be picky, but I’m more than fine with a full four star-rating. 3.75 for the sake of the exact rating cell. Now I wonder if this great feeling constitutes something like five stars. I think this justifies more a solid four star-rating for the book rather than a fractional rating. Four stars then for the exact rating. The feelings were very high for this book and I see no issue in four stars for the exact rating. Such are the troubles of trying to place values on feelings. Many great feelings were in this book.

This was better than the first volume, but I'm still not that invested in the story/characters. While I detest Ozen, I'm glad she's the only adult who made it clear "hey, you kids are FUCKING IDIOTS, you're going to DIE, I'll train you but DAMN you're so stupid". The artwork was still incredible and the Corpse Weepers are fucking TERRIFYING yet beautiful, kind of like the abyss in a way.

Anyway, that's all I've got, onto volume 3.
