I’m not sure why I expected this to be more radical than it was. WAY too many hunting scenes for my taste. It started to get really good about 70% in, when Harry talks about meeting Meghan. That’s the reason why I picked up the book to begin with, because I was interested in their story as royals who stood their ground and left. Prince Harry explores the way the paparazzi/media seriously affect their mental and physical safety, from the beginning of his life with his mom, to his wife and family now.

The writing is beautifully poetic at times throughout the book, but at the end of the day, it’s still written by a prince and a soldier whose deeply embedded views about war/the crown are complicated but maybe not complicated enough. It was just way too long of an audiobook for me to only be genuinely engaged for the last fourth. However, I’m so captured by Harry and Meghan’s story, and I really hope they’re doing well. It seemed like one of the reasons why I so enjoyed listening to the portion of the book about them was how Prince Harry’s writing was clearly ignited with a passion and poeticism when it came to her. I just love that.

I enjoyed listening along as well as reading the physical book on this one.  As a child growing up, he was awarded so many incredible experiences being a royal, even with being the spare.  But then, at such a young age to lose his adored mother, it seems that life was halted.  After his mother's death, it seems he was haunted and hunted all while experiencing his teen years . . that isn't easy for any child let alone a young man in that cold, impersonal royal "family" unit.  I use quotations because that family is his blood but that's about it. I could not imagine no hugs, no kisses, what a very cold-hearted bunch. Now he can be whoever he is meant to be and raise his children with love and affection. I'm certain his mother is smiling down upon his family unit.

“Whatever the cause, my memory is my memory, it does what it does, gathers and curates as it sees fit, and there’s just as much truth in what I remember and how I remember it as there is in so-called objective facts. Things like chronology and cause-and-effect are often just fables we tell ourselves about the past. The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

An honest, funny and moving account of Prince Harry’s life and the challenges that come with being the spare. I thought the book particularly picked up in the third section, talking about Meghan and recent events. Took me a while to get through but I ended up being very moved. Appreciated having an insight into a life completely different from my own.
