Timely. All Americans should read this.

The main story line was good! The down side - I was somewhat irritated by several of the side stories. Yes, they gave us another view of the neighborhood and the life of an immigrant but they were very disconnected from the main stories. Several of them were so brief that I felt they should have been left out entirely.

I enjoyed this book. It had a little bit of everything in it. The story of the family was very good, but I wasn't a big fan of the other side stories about people that seemed to be just thrown in and didn't really relate strongly to the main story. No spoilers, but it is an overall sad book. I thought the ending was good though, as it was realistic. It was a really fast read. 3 solid stars, which for me means I found it to be very good and a worthwhile read.

The book was very slow paced and the timeline of the main story seems warped, but I like how it was interspersed with the background stories of the other characters. It's definitely loaded with prejudice, both that the characters face and from the characters themselves.
