Great book...I am just not a fan of novels written in verse. That said, I still liked it very much!

I don’t even know how to write a proper review. I started reading and gosh, I was immediately amazed by the writing style. It’s just simply amazing. You start reading when Micheal is 6 years old and really wants a barbie for his birthday but doesn’t get one because his mom thinks it’s a joke. I really loved the storyline. We start with young Micheal and every chapter he gets older and older and he’s trying to embrace his own identity.
He writes poems which are shown in the book, like they are really written on lined paper. The poems are so damn beautiful written. I’m not into poems, but wow, they hit me in my feelings and I wrote so many things down while reading.
The story has so many eyeopeners. Why is it okay for his sis to play with boy toys and no one thinks that’s strange. But when he wants to play with Barbies, they think it’s a joke. This book really made me think about our society and how we raise kids. But it also made me more aware about Black lives, since I barely now anything about it to be honest. So this was such a good book to read for me.
My paperback contains many beautiful pages and illustrations. The story changes between black and white pages, with many illustrations of feathers and flamingos. But it also contains, like real text messages. And every ‘chapter’ starts with a gorgeous cover.

Somehow I was missing something in this
story tho. The story is really beautiful, but some things weren’t really in detail. But I guess that’s because of the writing style?

And I’m sad the story is already finished! Somehow I hope to read a sequel soon, because I wanna know more about Micheal and his identity journey.

This is beautiful, and powerful, and awe-inspiring.

When I first opened the book, I was not prepared for the entire thing to be written in free verse. I cringed. I thought I was going to hate it, and prepared myself to give up after a few pages.

The opposite happened. I could not put this down, not for an instant. I am speechless...there is nothing I can say about this book that would do it justice, so I'm just going to say, you should absolutely read this book, immediately.

And meanwhile, I'm going to go write down about 100 quotes I want to plaster over my walls and in my notebooks.

Phenomenal! A little getting used to a novel in verse at first, but really picks up. If eReading, do it on a screen where you can see the line ends where it would on the page!
