When I was young and naive...in my 20's...I swore I didn't like sci-fi or fantasy. A friend handed me a copy of [b:Ender's Game|375802|Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1)|Orson Scott Card|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1214413570s/375802.jpg|2422333] and I have been hooked ever since. Having learned nothing, I said something similar about graphic novels a while later and this same friend sat me down with a copy of [b:The Sandman Vol. 01: Preludes and Nocturnes|23754|The Sandman Vol. 01 Preludes and Nocturnes|Neil Gaiman|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1201718740s/23754.jpg|1228437]. Again, I was hooked and now I am the one who preaches the virtues of graphic novels to both friends and students. Neil Gaiman taught me one thing that day...graphic novels are wonderful! I've read much of his other writing since then and he's taught me other things, but I have to admit, even though I've seen many photos of the author, whenever I think of Neil Gaiman the image in my head is Dream.
I read the Sandman collection in the late 90's, but never owned my own copy. I worked at a library and would check them out over and over again. When I saw the Absolute collection, I had to have it! But then it sat on my shelf...I was too afraid of damaging it to open it. But then I read the [b:The Graveyard Book|2213661|The Graveyard Book|Neil Gaiman|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51sp9XoC4vL._SL75_.jpg|2219449] and remembered how much I loved the [b:The Sandman Vol. 01: Preludes and Nocturnes|23754|The Sandman Vol. 01 Preludes and Nocturnes|Neil Gaiman|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1201718740s/23754.jpg|1228437] series, so I broke it open and am re-reading it...again!
Sometimes you go back to old favorites and they pale in comparison to memory...not this! I am in love with it all over again and am rationing it - one story a night.
I just finished A Midsummers Night Dream...wow! Again, wow!
I just love - love - love this series. The re-issue of the artwork is spectacular and I could just sit and stare at some of the pages for hours...but I don't...it's always about the stories to me. Mr. Gaiman, you're bloody brilliant!

The Absolute Sandman series are without a doubt worth owning if you're at all a fan of the Sandman series and enjoy a really finely made and bound book.
The inking is entirely new for this edition, correcting all the errors that appeared in the originals (And, because the inking was done by all the original artists, the spirit of the original is preserved to a tee - no Lucas style reinvention of history going on here thank god!).
I treasure these books and look forward to the third volume coming out soon!

I had read everything in this volume by borrowing from friends, the library, etc., but I just bought my very own! It's lovely, heavy, beautiful and now I just need to find a week when I can hide and dig in!

I had no idea what I was stepping into when opening this - It's not a typical adventure fantasy, sci-fi, mythological epic, or even horror mystery. The Sandman character is utterly unique and the Dreamscape he inhabits also exists across the real world in the dreams of living creatures. Because of this, every place, time, and person is subject to being a setting or centrepiece to each issue.
Gaiman takes full advantage of this, bringing Morpheus into the pits of Hell, Hotel Convention Centres, the Justice League of America base, Arkham Asylum, and the minds of some pretty loveable and some other pretty demented characters.
Beyond the uniquely pensive writing style I've come to love from Gaiman, it is brought to life with the gorgeous accompanying art from the artists involved. The Absolute edition of this set of comics was completely the right choice to enter this world; Stunning binding, lengthy concept art, behind-the-scenes issue proposal write-ups and scripts. Super fascinating.
