Engaging dark fantasy/coming of age story with lots of magic. Fantastic, deep world-building. A quick read, but did not engage us reading it aloud. Far better with the voices in your head.

Remember absolutely *loving* this series as a child - and don't get me wrong I still found my reread really enjoyable, but I did find the magic system felt a little loose and undefined in comparison to fantasy I've read as an adult.

I received this series as a Christmas present, and was honestly quite excited to start reading it. Many years ago, I’d read a bit of the second book, Lirael, but I never got the chance to finish it—so I was glad I would be able to get that chance.

However, this book was really disappointing. It has such interesting concepts and a unique magic system, but the plot is a bit lacklustre, the descriptions were often confusing and hard to envision, and the book itself is boring. The characters are underdeveloped and I wasn’t able to like any of them. There was practically 0 character development aside from a romance subplot that didn’t even feel natural—it felt like it was forced just because it’s expected for the main male and female characters to always fall in love. But, ultimately, I felt completely indifferent towards the romance, because I was indifferent towards the characters as well.

I might continue the series considering it was a gift, but I’m not particularly excited to do so.
