The epilogue was interesting. I learned that Elisabeth died at the age of sixty, on September 10, 1898. She was murdered by a 24 year old who stabbed her. There were other cool facts.

I found the afterward more interesting than the diary itself, but also consider that I am not the book's intended audience.

I enjoyed Elisabeth's story, especially once she and the Emperor were introduced. However, I feel that the story cut off just as it was getting to the good part, ending it with a rather rushed epilogue. The diary portion of the book should have been longer to go into detail about how her marriage to the Emperor began to deteriorate and how her mother-in-law tried her best to remain in power.

The afterward was better than the diary portion of this novel.
I have to reread this series and give my adult post graduate degree perspective but what I remember liking was:
-the characters in this series were roughly my age when I read the books (YA)
-it gave you an idea of what life may have been like back then
-they did have an afterword with historic information that gave you more context on their real lives and often photos or paintings

This was a really quick read. It could have used a bit more development, but I liked the subject of the book, and learned a lot about the historical period. It was definitely intriguing.

I would have liked to know more about Elizabeth. One of the things I love about the Royal Diaries is showing the princess interacting with her family before and after marriage. It seemed to not spend enough time before her marriage to even establish her family before she gets engaged and swept away from her family.

I didn't know much about Austria or Eilsabeth, so this was new territory for me and I enjoyed it. Now that I've read more history of on Elisabeth and Austria, I realize that some of my very basic background probably came from this book. So, these Royal Diaries did and are serving a positive purpose for young girl readers.
