Wow. This is the third of Nelson DeMille's books that I've read, and I think so far the best!

Scott Brick does a great job of embodying Corey. I understand why the book ended like it did but it felt like a cop out too (no pun intended).

adventurous mysterious slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

I mean, I wasn't expecting huge amounts from this holiday read I picked up at a hotel book shelf but even I was left disappointed by the ending. Up until then it had been okay. Having not read any other Nelson DeMille books and this being the third book didn't matter at all. Some nice characters introduced and some interesting plot.
Some odd plot choices in the middle such as
sending the two leads to foreign countries and the plot completely jumping to their return with it making seemingly no difference to anything except further hints that amounted to nothing.

The ending was a complete let down
why the author thought that setting up a whole book only to end it in such a dismissive way with no conclusions was a good idea I have no idea. And the final page was again a complete let down of a set up. It felt like he realised he had written a book which was about real events and he was too timid to have a conclusion so he found a way to avoid one.

Nelson DeMille has written a thriller that deserves no spoilers, and I won't give you any. TWA Flight 800 happened. A civilian airliner, bound for Rome, exploded in midair, off the coast of Long Island, on July 17, 1996. Poetic license says the flight in NIGHT FALL is Paris bound. That's what you do with a work of fiction based on an actual event. 230 people lost their lives.

Five years later, John Corey attends a memorial service for those lost with his wife, Kate Mayfield. This sets off a clandestine investigation into the accident. As in the book, there were questions and conspiracy theories surrounding the crash. John Corey does what he does best with his usual NYPD style. He does his job and asks for forgiveness only if (or when) necessary.

Using TWA 800 as the backdrop, the ensuing story has it all. There is suspense and retribution; there are angels, and there are demons. It is a microcosm of the world in which we live. The build-up is to a perfect ending that will leave you in tears.

And, Nelson DeMille knows how to properly use the word 'who.'

The ending surprised me to gasping point!!! Third in the John Corey series, DeMille examines the TWA Flight 800 disaster with a fresh set of eyes with John Corey and his wife Kate Mayfield, both FBI terrorist specialists, investigating the flight's demise from a conspiracy point of view.

This book is quick, fun read ruined by a terrible ending (or lack thereof). The main character is typical of DeMille: quick witted, sarcastic, and humorous. It is a page turner and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole story, but I couldn't get past how disappointing the ending was.

This is my third time reading this book. While I wasn't thrilled with some bloating in the middle, too much irrelevant detail in places, the last 100 pages of so of this book were super intense and powerful. You know an author is doing a good job when you fear for the life of a minor character as events unfold. For me, this is the best of the John Corey series and the only one I have kept over the years.
