This is an okay book. The writing is good, the characters are understandable but for some reason it doesn't make me feel, despite being filled with the kind of angst that I love. I can't say why but despite that it was a nice read. I got defensive at first since I have read so many bad BDSM based romances where abuse is confused with power play for pleasure. But this isn't that, once you get both POVs it's obvious they both understand the limits and have (the equivalent of) safe words. After that the sexy bits were enjoyable enough and I never got worried it was about self harm or abuse, just two people who enjoy power games in a consensual way. Aside from that it's a pretty standard m/m period romance and there is nothing wrong with that, just nothing remarkable either.

A radical seditionist and a Tory lackey fall in love. Only KJ Charles could pull off this premise. This book is a a masterclass.

The first chapter, despite being mostly brutal sadomasochistic sex, reveals so much about the characters. I love the way consent and mutual understanding is conveyed with the bedsport. I love the way a lack of mutual understanding is conveyed with the Frankenstein conversation.

I adore the way history and politics are used in this book as well.

4.5 stars. I found this book quite charming. It tells of two men who meet every Wednesday anonymously, each separately longing for Wednesdays, not knowing they are mortal enemies. I liked both MCs Silas and Dom, and how sweet they were to one another, how poetic some of their declarations of love were. I was curious how they could end up together given both were committed to their convictions and had such disparate backgrounds, but the ending was perfect in that each made a slight sacrifice in order to be together. It was also a nice detail that some events of the book were actually true.

Well, I wound up liking this book more than I thought I would. I almost gave it a pass because I really didn't like Silas in the previous book and Dom was...kind of just there in my mind. And, truthfully, I'm not really a fan of BDSM. And that's what this is, before there was even a term for it and it was seen more as something wrong with a person.

However, I liked this story. I liked Silas (especially) and Dom together - mostly when they were arguing or being sweet. Because there were a few surprisingly sweet moments. I was okay with the sex, at least once we got away from the start (which felt a little rape-y) and into Dom's head. (Some of it was even kind of hot.)

(I also loved Ash getting involved and being his usual irreverent self.)

Pretty much what I was expecting when I saw that this was going to be the next story. Still, the story more or less fell together, and I was happy with the happily ever after part, such as it was. Looking forward to the third novel in the trilogy.

Did not finish. No rating. I could not understand the story after forgetting everything from book #1.
