This book is an undertaking. I read it with a group over 3 months as a slow and steady which I know affected my experience. Prolonging some of the absolutely horrible subject matter probably made it an even more difficult read than it is.
In the end, I was just ready to be done and I probably missed some impact because of it.
For me, it was just too long and I never was able to completely keep track of the multitude of characters. Major trigger warnings abound.

This book is the best book I ever read. This story was one that I wish I had had all my life. As a woman descended from the South, this book song to me, angered me, and drew tears from a faraway place in my soul. Jeffers is the kind of writer that knows how to paint a visual with her words and engross the reader with story. Love Songs soared through time effortlessly, sharing stories long lost waiting to be uncovered by the curious. This book, this story, this family …. timeless. Read it prepared to think, grieve and listen.

I have not seen a single bad (or honestly, less than stellar) review of this book. And this review won’t be either.

WOW. This book is exquisite.

Jeffers is a poet, but damn she can write fiction! It’s incredible that this is her debut novel. How did she make an 800 page multigenerational saga a page turner? How, after 800 pages, am I devastated that I have to leave Ailey Pearl Garfield and her family behind?

I really don’t have any more to say, because if this book isn’t on your TBR, what are you even doing? Don’t be intimidated by it’s length. It’s perfect. It’s epic. It’s heartbreaking. And it’s oh so necessary.
