Not as good as the first one. Felt it drag here and there. At this point I just want someone to win. So much back and forth between wanting to fight or flee, etc. But I also think that makes it realistic, never knowing if it was the right choice, etc. Also I love
Roen and Zelie together so that needs to work out bc I can’t stand Inan with her, he didn’t deserve her.
and that ending, wtf. Feels kinda drawn out but I’m also excited to see where this goes.

This series is amazing. I tend to like historical fiction or non-fiction books, but these ones have just enough magic to make it fun. I look forward to Orisha #3!

DNF/Paused: 70%—I'll come back when the next book comes out

Audiobook Review

CW/TW: death, torture, parental abuse, mutilation, child death, imprisonment, government oppression, racism,

here: enjoy my scrabble and confused thoughts.

I am so confused. What is going on!? I am so confused. I. Am. So. Confused!

Everything feels too planned, too convenient. It's too often that the war almost ends but then something dramatic happens. Like, I like when that happens, but not when it happens every few chapters. I'm tired of the war almost ending and then some small-nyana thing happening and whoop, here we war again. It's exhausting and feels redundant.

Zélie is an important figure head in this war and yet she is basing all of her decisions on her broken heart. Look, I am not a fan of characters who get betrayed but seem to get over it quick as a breath, I want characters to stay angry, to feel the betrayal, and Zélie feels it. HOWEVER she is basing literally every decision on her broken heart, she refuses to look beyond her own heart and at the People that'll have to sacrifice they're lives for this war, for her.

Inan ☠️ his character always gets ruined. Do we have to suffer Inan making good choices and then having one small-nyana thing happening and then all of a sudden he's Darth Vader? Come on now, there has to be something better, something more. I'm tired of watching Inan be the king we all deserve and then having something prick him and suddenly he's spiraling to evil. It's tiring and boring and redundant.

Nehanda is a hot mess of a character and I don't understand her one single bit, her and her mess of a council. Like okay, so the whole reason yalls was fighting with maji is coz they had magic that could destroy you, now you have that magic and you still hate the maji? The sense ma'am, the sense? There is none. I don't understand why they were still working so hard to annihilate the maji if they also have magic. Literally all the maji wanted was to be seen and they just said no, continue war? Sense? None.

And this woman is a whole asshole, plus too. You would shame your daughter in front of everyone when she's trying to fucking save your people but coddle your evil son. Sense ma'am, none. She is such an awful mother and I honest to gods want her dead already (Noah Fence to her). She does nothing but be annoying the whole time. I don't get it, I DON'T GET IT. She's so unnecessary, like not as a character but as a person. I hate her so much and I try not to hate characters. But her, she's.... Ugh!

There are so many new characters! There are so many new chacarters that my fave Tzain gets pushed to the side and only comes back to comfort Amari. Well I don't mind Tzain and Amari truth be told, but why. Also, Amari is another one who's feelings switch up way too quickly. I don't know, I get why she'd be angry, as angry as she is, but with the way this book is already set up, character emotions switch up too quickly for me to feel convinced by their new emotions.

By the time I DNF'd I didn't care about any of the chacarters, I didn't care whether they lived or died. I just wanted it to be over! This book is disappointing as hell. I wanted it to be better, but it only got worse. I'm tired.

P. S. We could've had it all with Zélie and Amari

The world and characters that Adeyemi created are amazing! It’s fantastical and also relatable. I tore through it only to be dangled off a cliff until I can get my hands on the third book! I loved it because of the rich world-building and magic system. I was annoyed with the characters and some of the choices at times, but I understood why they made them. Tomi is an incredible writer and I’m excited to read more from her.
