I wish I'd reread Children of Blood and Bone, which I'd read back in 2019, before reading this instalment. I thought the summaries I'd read online were good enough, but there were key details I couldn't remember, which impacted my understanding and emotional connection to the book when I started. Still, I managed to get into it after not too long!

This instalment wasn't as strong as the first. The characters' behaviour and decisions didn't always line up or seemed too naïve, some plot lines seemed rushed, and certain things needed a bit more explanation and elaboration. It definitely felt a little repetitive at times too.

Still, it wins point for ultimately being a page turner! Won't leave the final instalment so long. Plan to read it next month!

A nice little bit of matricide would solve 90% of the problems in this tragedy. Any mercy is met with genocide, manipulation, delusional justification of absolutely atrocious acts of violence.

Inan and Amari keep falling into old childish narcissistic mental traps, ptsd and insecurities.  Frustrating close calls and glaringly obvious pitfalls due to emotional attachments.

Still seeing more throne of glass esque than the announced Harry Potter similarities. Especially with the amount of trauma, close calls, and epic empathy fails. I’m

TOMI ADEYEMI GOIN 2 FOR 2! This book gave me so much stress & anxiety but I couldn't put it down! AMARI...GIRLLLL you fucked up BADDDDD. Like there's not coming back from what you've done.
Forcing your way into being a Connector elder, leading Inan to the sanctuary, SACRFICING ZÉLIE & HER VILLAGE
ALL FOR THAT STUPID THRONE??? ARE YOU DAFT?? Inan...I still don't like you but you weren't eggregiously terrible like in Book 1. QUEEN NEHANDA YOU SKIN- BLEACHED BITCHHHHHHHHHHH
YOU'RE THE REASON THE MAJI ARE OPRESSED IN THIS CURRENT ERA?? YOU KILLED SARAN'S FATHER??? I HOPE YOU'RE DEAD

I just want Zélie & Tzain to catch a break maneeee. They been through so much. Röem...I don't feel anything for him tbh. I just don't want Zélie's heart broken again so I'm keeping him at arm's length. Tzain's realization about
Amari's plan to sacrifice Zélie was so well-written! I could feel the pain in his voice!
That's how you know an author's perfecting their craft. When you can feel the emotions of characters through words.

I can't wait to read Book 3!!

Second time reading this, first time by audio format. I enjoyed the print version more. It’s fun to see the growth of the characters but, wow, do they make some awful decisions. The ending shocked me all over again.

An interesting installment for the trilogy that deals with a lot of the same themes of the first book. This one frustrated me, tho, because of the lack of character growth. The main characters continue to make the same mistakes time and time again and grapple with the same flaws that it becomes boring.
