I'm having a hard time writing this review because I can't see through my tears.  This one hits in the feels, hard.  It's impossible not to fall in love with the characters Arikawa writes in this book, she manages to capture humanity in a way few authors I've read do.  I definitely want to read more of her work if it's been translated into English

I listened to The Travelling Cat Chronicles as an audiobook and absolutely fell in love with the storytelling of Hiro Arikawa. I read the English edition translated by Philip Gabriel.

The central character is a cat, initially with no name! Rescued as a stray with a broken leg, he is named Nana and the tale is told mainly from their point of view along with their owner, Satoru. The story is a meandering tale but not one that you will forgot in a hurry. 4 long chapters, and a bit more, tells of the good times and bad, of school friendships and familial relationships in the face of loss and ultimately the parting of ways.

While cats are central to the story, you do not need to be a pet lover to enjoy it. I would love to have a  “fur baby” but for lots of reasons do not and I loved every single page of this novel. Warning, you might need a box of tissues with this read.

If you’ve ever shared a special bond with a cat, this book is for you. So beautifully written.
