I have to admit this book surprised me more than once. I thought it was going in a certain direction that I was sure was going to be banal. Then it pivoted and pivoted again and pivoted again. The only thing banal was the ending, but I didn’t mind that because it felt like it needed to be. After all the trauma and turmoil in her life, Ani deserved banal.

Let me start this out by saying I went into this book completely blind. This is good because I don’t think I would have read it if I had read anything about it. This is bad because this book needs every content warning available.

I picked up this book because it was made into a movie and I LOVE doing back to back book to movie to see how they actually compare.

Going into Luckiest Girl Alive blind was completely wild. Meeting Ani and being so curious about her trauma is an instant hook - seeing someone who seems so put together and continues to talk about how none of who she is is genuine is such a fascinating aspect of experiencing trauma. Honestly I stuck with the book regardless of all of the hard content because I wanted to see her make a decision by herself and for herself.

Of course the entire book is based around Ani’s years in private school and the trauma that was the result. Throughout the time Ani was describing everything that happened to her I wanted to just yell at young Ani (TifAni at this point) and console her when everything went wrong. In that aspect this book stands out from so many thrillers I have read. Even when describing traumatic incidents Ani went through it felt like I was there (in allll of the best and worst ways).

As much as I was sucked in by the writing and the plot it did seem to be a bit like a car crash - so bad that you want to look away but can’t. The events of Luckiest Girl Alive are so challenging to read that it is a book I would have a very hard time recommending to anyone but I just want to find someone who has read it so I can process what happened.
