The best part of this was reading it in the original rangers voices. Loving this might have to run out and get the second volume.

Collects Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issues #0-4.

Review: I absolutely love the threads this story takes from the show and expands and develops. Seeing Tommy’s struggle with Rita’s brainwashing, the damage these fights cause to the city and citizens, and the pure wickedness of Rita Repulsa is awesome. They took a concept so ridiculous in nature (six teenagers with attitude get dinosaur powers from a floating alien head and a robot!) and make it fun, realistic, and as badass as any super hero comic out there.

Story Recap: Tommy struggles with being freed from Rita’s grasp and the trauma of what he did under her control. As he tries to adapt to his normal life, visions of Rita haunt him and cause him to make mistakes as a ranger. As the team starts to notice and tensions mount between allowing a former “traitor” on the team and giving Tommy a chance, Rita uses the disruptions and chaos to power her Green Chaos Crystal powered by the Green Ranger’s negative energy. Tommy breaks the mental blocks he was giving himself “from” Rita and helps defeat Scorpina taking control of the Dragonzord. The Command Center is blown up by the Chaos Crystal being fully charged and the rangers come face to face with a new adversary.

Since my childhood I have adored Power Rangers, I remember running around with my friends pretending to be them. I was obviously the green ranger, who wouldn’t choose the Dragonzord! Shamefully this is the first Power Ranger comic I have read and wow it was a good one. I’m kind of gutted I didn’t start sooner.

Following on from the events of Rita Repulsa’s creation of the Green Ranger and his subsequent attack on earth Tommy has joined the power rangers but he is still fighting off Rita’s efforts to manipulate him.

This story was, for me, a superb introduction to the world of Power Ranger comics. It was everything I loved from Power Rangers as a child but with a darker tone. This is the first time i’ve read anything from the group of writers but it most certainly will not be the last. The story is brilliantly written with a lot of excellent panels. The way that the writers are able separate the personalities of each ranger to express their individualities is expertly done. Even the writing of Tommy, feels separate from the ranger team so there's such depth in the storytelling.

The artists do an awesome job in this book. The colours pop as you’d expect from a power rangers comic and the art is beautiful and smooth. The ability to make panels feel like they have a darker tone whilst all the while using a bright colour palette are testament to their skill and the excellent writing.

For fans of Power Rangers, you will not be disappointed if you pick up and read this vol of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, most especially if you're a tommy oliver/green ranger fan like myself. The only downside is that I couldn't hear the tune of the dragon dagger! But they obviously couldn’t help that! Maybe next time!

As a huge fan of the original MMPR TV series (seriously I cosplayed Rita Repulsa in college before the whole '90s nostalgia trend kicked in), I wanted to LOVE this series. But I didn't. I could nitpick some of the details (Billy is way too cool, for instance, and Rita never once says "I have a headache"), but really my ambivalence comes from the plotting and pacing decisions.

The story picks up after the Green with Evil arc of the show, when Tommy breaks free of Rita's grasp and joins the Rangers. Frankly, it's jarring, especially because that arc is such an important one for all the rangers, especially Tommy. So while picking up after those events allows us to get into Tommy's conflicted head, we don't really KNOW any of these characters (I still want character development, even if it's a reboot of something very familiar). I found myself not really caring about anyone except, oddly, Rita (or maybe not so oddly).

The tension between the rangers felt awkward and sort of manufactured, which is a really weird thing to say about a franchise that was cut together from Japanese and American footage. I was hoping that because this is a comic and there are no budgetary restraints and it's also geared toward adults instead of kids that I would get a more fulfilling experience, but no. I also find that I really, really, really want this to be set in the '90s. I think it loses something by being modernized--I can't relate as much, having never been a kid in the 00s, and I'm 100% sure this series is aimed at my demographic, so that choice strikes me as an odd choice.

I didn't hate it--the art is great, and it's fun to revisit this world from a different perspective, but I wasn't blown away. I'll keep reading because I love MMPR, but I'm sad it didn't blow me away.

I watched MMPR as a kid so finding out that Boom Studios has been doing a comic revival was exciting to say the least. This has so much heart and it doesn't just play into nostalgia, it's actually telling a good story.
