Because I'm Your Dad by Ahmet Zappa

Sweet and fun and Dan Santat's illustrations are wonderful as usual, but what bugged me about this book is that it seemed like just a list of all the cool things this particular dad (who is wealthy and privileged) could do for his kid. And nothing about the hard parts of being a dad or having a dad - which I kept waiting for - like having to sometimes say no to the mud forts or staying up late. Many dads can't take their kid out of school to fly to NYC for a hot dog or buy their kid drums just because they want to. It's awesome that he will do all of these things for his kid, but being a dad (or being a kid) is not all about the fun stuff.

This book was great... until the very last page. We put a post-it that says ‘because I love you’ over the words ‘because my Dad did the same for me’. Much better.

***All questions answered by my 4 year old***

Do you like this book?
I like it a lot! The funny costumes made me laugh, and some of the humans didn't have costumes!

What's your favorite part of the book?
The mud forts, because they're dirty and muddy. And I like when they burp. My daddy burps a lot! This book makes me feel super excited!

What do you think of the cover?
Hmmm. I like the daddy and the baby. I like both of the monsters, but the daddy monster is my favorite. I super like daddy monsters and my daddy.

Do you want me to read it again?
Yeah, next time.

What Momma Thinks...
This is an absolutely adorable book. It goes through all of the things this monster daddy will do for his son, because he's his daddy and that's what his daddy did for him. It's cute and has great art, and I swear the last couple pages always makes me tear up.

I am a recent fan of Dan Santat's illustrations and this is another example of his awesome talent. The story is cute too and never feels stilted or forced.

We have this board book and Emme (20 months) loves it. She wants to read it everyday and then she tries to read the pages herself. Very cute book.
