A slow start but wow it was worth it. I didn't see it coming, each chapter spun my whole thought process and I was hooked.
I really enjoyed how it was written from multiple points of view and how they sometimes overlapped.

I really really thought I knew who the killer was but nope. Not even close. This book had me on my toes, from beginning to end, through every twist that kept happening.

This story is told from 3 POVs: His (Jack's), Her's, and the truth (the mysterious killer).

I reread each POV that was the killer's 3 times each to make sure my guess of the killer was probably correct. It still wasn't. Alice Feeney did an excellent job at keeping you guessing.

This book gives me weird, sex cult Heather's vibes but grown up in a mystery thriller book. I honestly think that's the best way to describe this book.

I really enjoyed reading this book A LOT! I loved the dual POV and the time stamps for each chapter. I also really liked how there were chapters sprinkled in where we didn’t know who’s POV it was, we could only speculate.

While I liked reading the book, I wasn’t obsessed with the ending. When I was reading I was trying to figure out the big twist, and I feel like my prediction would’ve been a better story line. But I really didn’t see all the smaller tiny twists that seemed to happen each chapter and that’s why I loved reading it!

This was a really good one by Alice Feeney and she has slayed me once again!

Read as part of The StoryGraph’s Genre Challenge 2023: Prompt 9. A horror or mystery novel written by a woman or nonbinary author

I know it sounds ridiculous but I know I’m onto a winner of a book when I write pieces of the review as I read because of how good it is and wanting to capture my thoughts as I go. This was exactly one of these books.

Clever clever writing. This author is a flipping genius. The last book I read by Alice Feeney was “Sometimes I Lie”. If you have read that book you won’t blame me for spending the entire book waiting for the twist. Looking for how the book will turn on its head. Appearing to mean one thing and meaning another. The first one comes a way into the book and gave me absolute whiplash. What?! That person is who?! Even in saying that I know some people will see it as a spoiler and yet I can say with a level of almost certainty you won’t know what I’m on about given that I spent the book up until that point thinking and trying to figure out that *exact question* and yet still came up empty. In fact this entire part of the review I’m writing is being written at the point of that reveal with no idea of if a further reveal I yet to happen and I know myself well enough to know the rest of the book will also be spent searching for the next upending of my perceived world and yet, with the genius that is Feeney, not seeing it until it smacks me in the face.

Having now finished the book all I can do is shake my head in disbelief. Absolutely mad numbers of twists and red herrings even in the last couple of chapters where I thought my guess was wrong, then right then wrong again then landed on one or the other but I couldn’t possibly tell my review readers!

I will add that there are some content warnings you should be aware of: child abuse, animal abuse, and sexual abuse and rape. There were definitely parts I struggled to read and that a reader should be aware of. Yet I have still maintained the 5 star read for the book due to the total unpredictability of it and it having me on the edge of my seat right the way through.
