Do not expect this to be like the Disney movie. This is an entirely different tale. It's quite good, definitely aimed at the younger readers. A delightful fantasy for all mouse lovers. The ending shows the authoress did not have the series planned out in advance. There is plenty of adventure and excitement in the book, a most dangerous cat to avoid, and seemingly insurmountable obstacles to overcome. I had read two other books in this series before, but not the first one. The later books are even better, in my opinion.

I've wanted to read The Rescuers because I really enjoyed the Disney animated version.

That said, as much as I liked the concept of talking mice, this book (published in 1959) had a lot of things in it that made me cringe because of her subjective writing of the animals, their characters and surroundings.

The author made the charcters (Miss Bianca, Bernhardt and Nils) feel vrey much almost human with human characteristics. I'm not so sure I've liked that either. There is something in this book that I didn't enjoy but can't put my finger on what exactly it was.

Athough it's a 'make-you-feel-good' kind of story, there are plenty of better books I've read like The Wind in the Willows or Winnie the Pooh, which in my opinion were more better written and more enjoyable.

Of course there is no real depth in most children's books but I personally like a story that is funny, imagnative but at the same time has some kind of depth to it.

This book was not what I was expecting at all. If you're going into this book with the mindset that it will have even the slightest resemblance to the beloved Disney classic, you, my friend, are in for a surprise. The only resemblance is the title, Miss Bianca, and Bernard.

At first I was very doubtful that I would enjoy it. But it didn't take long for the story to grow on me. I loved the characters of Miss. Bianca and Bernard. AND NILS! I wish Nils had been in the cartoon! That would have been amazing. Each of them brought their own strengths to the table and they worked together splendidly. The plot was very quick, exciting, and captivating and by the end of the story, I was left wanting more.

It was cute- I liked the language and illustrations, but it was not something I could breeze through. The language is older and I was not always familiar with it. But that made it more interesting.

The illustrations are fun... and a bit disturbing. The book is quite different from the way the characters are portrayed in the Disney films (no big surprise there). My question is... What if the poet really deserved to be in prison? I mean, what do we really know about the guy?

What a great children's adventure story!

I loved the film as a child and only just discovered it was based on a book. The book is very different but a thrilling read for a 7-11 year old.

The Prisoners' Aid Society of mice have vowed to help people in need. There is a Norwegian imprisoned in the notorious Black Castle, unbreachable and with a famously evil cat in residence.

Bernard, a pantry mouse volunteers to speak to the pampered Miss Bianca, an embassy dweller who can help find a Norwegian speaking mouse. Can they find such a mouse? And how will they get into (and then out of) the Black Castle?

Non-stop action and adventure. The three leads make a good team and all have memorable traits, and the scenes with the castle cat are very funny.

I can imagine children going straight from this to the sequels. When my son is old enough I'll be showing him the film and reading him this book.

Not too long, full of excitement and some lovely mouse heroes.
