I really, really want to like Black Mask's Black universe. The concept is incredible: a universe where only Black people get superpowers, and how the world responds to that.

Much like the main title in the series, the beginning of the book sets up an intriguing situation, a main character you really root for, and puts them in immediate danger. But then it just becomes every boring superhero book. The dialog is weak, the art is bland, it does too much telling rather than showing.

It's never terrible, it's just never terribly good, either. It's a mediocre superhero book about an incredible concept. I really hope that enough people support this series so that the creative teams behind it can get better because this superhero universe deserves to be great, and needs to be better.

I really wanted to like this book. The plot was good, but the dialogue needs work.

Cute and fun with some heavy undertones (and overtones). I love Eli and want the best for her. Plus the art is adorable.

Super good and very relevant to all of the horrendous things happening in the U.S. but with kickass, empowered, black superheroes. Looking forward to volume 2!

Even though I barely remember this comic, i’m definitely going to re-read this.
