I think I"ve read this one before. It's not my favorite, but it's not bad. It's just funny how big things can brush past and horribly affect everyday people.

2.5 - It was definitely okay, one of my three problems with it - and the biggest - was the reader. I think the protagonist, Max, was supposed to be a young man, not yet thirty. However, the reader made him sound a great deal older, and sort of stuffy. I think if I could have "felt" that Max was under 30 I would have enjoyed the book more. I really enjoyed the beginning and all the nitty-gritties of running a restaurant. The mystery was compelling, but the reasons behind the hi-jinx were not plausible. And the fast-and-furious loved story between Max and Caroline made both of them look desperate. I found it really hard to believe. Oh well. On to the next!

I'm amazed that after all this time, Dick Francis can come up with new plots involving the racing world. I was relieved to like this, since he is now apparently writing with his son instead of his wife.

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed my first Dick Francis novel. It was enjoyable story and the main character.

Not as good the second time around. The romance was fine but the mystery made little sense.

This one was loaned, and recommended to my by a co-worker. Normally I would be a little skeptical about reading anything that was recommended by anyone (other than family). But I found this book to be very enjoyable, and kept me guessing until the very end (which I got partially right, there was a twist in the whodunit plot). Very entertaining book!!

Dead Heat is a murder mystery that is humorous, entertaining and captivating. It drags slightly in the beginning, but picks up as the plot thickens. I thoroughly enjoyed the audio version and reader was excellent.

It's the standard, simple, yet satisfying Francis fare. (That's punny, 'cause the book is about a chef who starts investigating when he is accused of food poisoning.)

Oh, boy. Obviously Felix is being groomed to take over the Francis dynasty from his dad, but I think we should just let it end.
This had all the elements you expect in a DF book, but it was just missing...something. The thing I like about the other books is that they are perfectly comfortable--the writing never jolts you out of the story, and the characters behave in a way that makes sense while still being interesting. I never minded them being formulaic, because he always executed it so well.
With this one, I kept cringing at the writing, and wondering what the hell the people were thinking, and plus, the romance was just kind of creepy.
