I want to reallllllly like these, but I'm only finding them mostly okay and entertaining, which is starting to annoy me. Yes, there are whiplash levels of twisty, interesting reveals, but the puzzles and clues feel kind of basic. Combined with the angsty love-triangle-ness of it all, it just feels a bit juvenile compared to other YA mysteries I've enjoyed. It's still a pretty fun ride, though, so I'm definitely go on to book 3. And Max is the best — she's with 3 stars just on her own!

i was gonna give this somewhere between 4 and 5 but then so much happened in the last couple chapters it kinda felt a bit overwhelming and was a bit all over the place. i did realllyyyyyyy enjoy this tho!!! this is my favorite series i've read in a long time. again i'm always a little surprised on how heavy the romance is but honestly i think this had good moments where there was no thought of it. sometimes though i just wanna shake avery like GIRL STOP THINKING ABOUT GRAYSON OR JAMESON THIS IS NOT THE TIME 😭 something crazy related to the mystery will happen and suddenly you''ll just read one of those two names like girl 💀

I really, really liked this book. Honestly, I thought it was even better than the first! There were so many plot twists and surprises I genuinely didn't see coming. Whenever I think I have a handle on predicting what is going to happen next, I find out I was completely wrong!

Like the first book, this one stars a bunch of teens and involves k*ssing/r*mance... except it's way worse this time.... I would've made this book 5 stars but because of this one scene I found to be especially gross, on top of being unnecessary (didn't contribute to the plot at all...), I really had to dock the entire book. (BTW, I'm 23.) Again, this didn't contribute to the plot but this scene was
Spoiler a bunch of the main characters--some minors, some NOT--taking their clothes off for a game (some down to their und*rwear, and it really seemed so random/ stuck out/ forced/ in contrast to the rest of the book!) </spoiler> because it served NO PURPOSE AND WAS SO WEIRD AND MADE ME SO UNCOMFORTABLE/WANT TO THR*W UP AND AHHHH!!

I still had the same problems with this book as I did with the first book in the series, The Inheritance Games, with the characters and the writing. Avery was annoying and really didn’t have any personality or defining traits. Other characters had the same problem too, or they just had one personality trait, like Max being nerdy or Libby being protective of her sister. The writing was still a bit cringey but I still found the book fun to read. The reason why I have rated this 2 stars instead of 3 is because of the love triangle. For most of the book, Avery is just wondering who she is going to choose, Jameson or Grayson, and it is quite predictable who she chose at the end of the book. This took away from the mystery which was quite interesting and made the book less fast paced. Another problem with this book was the ending, which was completely ridiculous, silly (pretty much all the plot twists were thrown in in the last 20% of the book), and rushed, and very minor characters in the book were suddenly very important. However, I still had fun reading the book, so it was a quick, fun read, but certainly not a quality one. I will read the sequel to see how everything ends, and hopefully it will wrap things up better than this one.

I enjoyed this one but not as much as the 1st book in the series.  That's not unusual for the second in a trilogy.
