super well written, but the mysteries felt a little flat to me - I'm not sure what Jackson did to solve the mysteries (interviewed more people??), things wrapped up a little too quickly and neatly, and I got a little bored with some of the characters (cough*amelia*cough). that being said, i'm definitely planning on picking up the second one.

The intertwining of three separate cases and strong characters made this a pleasure to read.

Loved the story, starts out as separate stories. They do get woven in finally - got a little lost and had to go back and reread a portion. Did get caught up in the story - loved it!

Enjoyable, suspenseful, with some unexpected twists at the very end. Interesting characters and interweaving of stories.

I read this when it first came out and thought it was only ok. I decided to re-read it after watching the series on Masterpiece and am really glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed it this time around - the author does a great job of making the characters and the various plot lines interesting. You never know where the story is going, yet it makes sense and comes together nicely in the end. I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Meh. Wanted to like it but it wasn't a good mystery or a good family saga. She has better books.

I really enjoyed this book on so many levels. It is really pleasurable to read. The characters are so fun and alive. I almost didn’t care who committed the crimes. I docked this book a star because this author did something that really bugs. This book is marketed as a mystery. But her protagonist, as charming as he was, didn’t really solve any of the murders. The author just lets you know what happens in the end. I hate it when mystery writers do that. Her protagonist was smart and hard working. He could have accomplished figured this out if the author had let him.

Read this book. You’ll like it. You probably won’t have the hang ups that I did.

4* for great writing, but meh...I didn't love the book. Atkinson is a wonderful writer and her psychological insight was fascinating, uncomfortable to read and spot-on successful because of that. This is a book someone else will love for all the doom, gloom and dysfunction, but its not my thing. I will try some of the author's other books eventually. Our book club felt this was written well, but we weren't excited about it. I look forward to being more moved by other works of hers.
