Can’t help but feel somewhat cheated out of a slow paced sprawling story, brimming with restraint and anticipation instead of the bones I read instead.

However despite my frustration at the length I did find the male leads and their relationship sweet along with most of the ensemble who I hope make reappearances later in the series.

Thankful that something managed to pull me out of my slump

Story: 5 stars
Narration: 4 stars

Kris Antham is a new to me narrator and he was a revelation! A multitude of voices for the characters, accents, amazing pacing and sfx touches for things like when Laurent got glimpses of his lost memories and feelings coming through

What it was missing a bit though, and that might be a total ME problem, was the atmosphere, especially in the beginning of the story. Another thing is that as much as sfx was appreciated I could hardly understand what Laurent's mother was telling him together with the accent. Also I was completely flabbergasted with how de Valois was pronounced o_O.

Still I enjoyed this immensely.

I had my eye on this series for a while and I own the first 3 books but seeing the ARC offer for the whole series I knew that that would be what will get me off my sweet behind and start it!!! Oh and how I should have started this so much sooner!!!

Iris Foxglove (an author duo under 1 penname) delivers a very powerful story! Intrigue, politics, heartache, romance, BDSM!!! There is an author's note to inform the reader about how the Dominance and submission is handled and it doesn't relate to RL but I didn't see trigger warnings so here are some:

- Degradation and humiliation
- Spitting
- Physical abuse for abuse sake
- Hanging
- Mentions of suicide

When it comes to the first 3 of the above our MC, Sabre, as a true, True Masochist (tending a bit to the extreme) takes pleasure from them. Me on the other hand I do enjoy the first 2 extremely when it is between 2 loving partners, so here, given the story, I did squirm uncomfortably but I kept reminding myself that Sabre was enjoying those not only because he is a Masochist but because he was secure in his trust and belief that he belonged to Laurent.

I won't go into more when it comes to the story just know that the HEA (well HEA for then, those 2 got another book) was so satisfying, so warm, so perfect I couldn't not read it and I stayed up till 1am to do so when my wake up call is at 6am!

My two niggles are:
- Being/going under -> With the way it is used I guess it's subspace but it wasn't clearly stated . Although since the word topspace is used why subspace wasn't used I don't understand.
- There were times in dialogues (and times out off them) that the way they were written I had to do double takes to understand the shape of the sentence and then follow along on the meaning. But it really didn't deter from my enjoyment of the story.

I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.
