A combination of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, this short story is considered an early American feminist work. Published in late 19th century, this short story still remains significant in today's world. A quick read will give you a story of an ill woman who is stuck in a country house with a bedroom plastered with the titular yellow wallpaper. Fretful diary entries about the house, her health, and her husband's insistence that she "take the country air", slowly turns into a creepy nightmare.

Although the narrator has a mental problem here, the story bears a stark resemblance to today's neo conservative's stand regarding feminine health issues like abortion. This idea that only men know what's good for women and they're better off listening and obeying their wishes.

This is a very short read but so descriptive and actually quite chilling. It highlights the dangers and consequences of old ways of dealing with mental health such as rest, get fresh air, don't do anything, don't dwell on it etc and also the poor attitudes that lead to neglect, disregard and worsening states. This is a novella that has such an impact and still stands today even though it was published in 1892.
