easily one of the best books i’ve ever read. an incredible story of a young immigrant girl who finds her way into the lives of an unassuming and grief-stricken family.

heart-warming. tragic. beautiful. complex. inspiring. emotional. silly.

everyone who is able should read this book (note content warnings)

would've enjoyed more if I'd have a content warning in advance. Was often shocked and horrified by the happenings throughout the story.

Unfortunately, this book takes a while to get into. I finally became interested around page 100 (just before really, but not much). Once you hit that section, it moves quickly.

White Saviourism. White Fragility. White man writing
the marketing of the book tricked me into thinking I was about to read a heart warming story.  This is not heartwarming.  it is gut wrenching. I would read a story about the refugee crisis, I would read the story of the hardships of a young Nigerian woman thrown into a detention center. I would read about her unlikely connection to a white British woman. However, I felt something was off reading it all from a white male voice. The end was ambiguous. The author could have written an article about the issues instead of a book, or he could have written it with male voice not a young black girl or a rich white woman. ugh
