White Saviourism. White Fragility. White man writing 
the marketing of the book tricked me into thinking I was about to read a heart warming story.  This is not heartwarming.  it is gut wrenching. I would read a story about the refugee crisis, I would read the story of the hardships of a young Nigerian woman thrown into a detention center. I would read about her unlikely connection to a white British woman. However, I felt something was off reading it all from a white male voice. The end was ambiguous. The author could have written an article about the issues instead of a book, or he could have written it with male voice not a young black girl or a rich white woman. ugh

I love this book. It is one I read as a teenager and picked up again recently. However, now reading through my new perspective, I am discouraged that it is a story about 2 women (one a black refugee from Nigeria) written by a white man. Knowing this made me love the book less the second time I read it, because it makes the perspectives less believable and almost feels like the tale has an odd fetishization of the refugee experience. I give the book the good rating mostly due to the poetics of the writing holding up despite questionable narratives.
