easily one of the best books i’ve ever read. an incredible story of a young immigrant girl who finds her way into the lives of an unassuming and grief-stricken family.

heart-warming. tragic. beautiful. complex. inspiring. emotional. silly.

everyone who is able should read this book (note content warnings)

NOT a fan. The entire second half of the book felt so rushed, and the way the characters were written rendered them entirely unbelievable. The conversation trying to be had is important, but I was utterly disappointed by this author’s attempt to have it.

White Saviourism. White Fragility. White man writing
the marketing of the book tricked me into thinking I was about to read a heart warming story.  This is not heartwarming.  it is gut wrenching. I would read a story about the refugee crisis, I would read the story of the hardships of a young Nigerian woman thrown into a detention center. I would read about her unlikely connection to a white British woman. However, I felt something was off reading it all from a white male voice. The end was ambiguous. The author could have written an article about the issues instead of a book, or he could have written it with male voice not a young black girl or a rich white woman. ugh
