Unfortunately, this book suffers the oft noted fate of the middle book of a trilogy. It’s purpose is to get the reader from what was set up in book 1 to how that will conclude in book 3. The characters remain interesting but there was little in terms of it’s own plot while the vast majority was merely set up for the final book. Likewise, the ‘plot twist’s were really rather predictable. Obviously this book is necessary to complete the series but was definitely lacking something.

It has the same problems as the previous volume and the story seemed to be even more slowly developed, with parts that seemed not to contribute at all to the great picture - Imi's part for example was one I usually found myself to be bored with and really don't see how it will matter. Still there are a couple of characters that I do like to follow, Emerahl and Mirar, and Auraya surprised me. Me thinking she was another Mary Sue like Ayla ("I can fly! I understand languages! I can heal! I'm perfect in every way! I'm dating a god!") and then she goes and defies the gods. You go girl! The worldbuilding isn't as intense but we do have glimpses of this world history and it is intriguing. Why do the gods hate Immortals so much? What are the voids? What is Mirar's real threat to the gods? Are the gods in the north be the same in the south?! If yes, why the war? I do have some suspicions (can the souls be linked to all this? Do the gods need the immortal souls of humans to linger on?) but hopefully the conclusion will answer all those questions.

I found this trilogy by Trudi Canavan after immersing myself in The Black Magician trilogy.
This is drastically different to the one mentioned above and personally seems to be aimed at an older audience. The depth of the characters and the world you are in is immense. The settings are rich with details and the characters are deep and interesting.
The world is big and you get to see alot of it through the three books.
The use of magic is interesting and even more interesting are the characters who use it.
It is truly beautifully written; it is rich in description and because of it plants you right in the story with the characters (of which there are many).
I can't recommend this series, and author, enough.

All pieces are there, but it never goes anywhere. Main character is dull. The ending is interesting but it seems it tries to hook you up for the next part. I rarely leave bad reviews, but I do not see the hype
