I had the strange experience of starting with the original edition (from the library) then getting my own copy, not realizing it was the illustrated, abridged version. They're both beautiful, and the photos in the illustrated version are stunning, but I preferred more the in-depth dive (as well as mushroom ink drawings) of the other edition.

Very interesting, a good narrative explanation of some of the history of mycology and some current and upcoming advancements that rely upon it. Fungi are fascinating and alien, and play such a major role in so many essential processes on Earth, and yet I know so little about them. It was very cool to learn more about them in a compelling narrative format, and I really enjoyed the audiobook format narrated by the author on Spotify.

As this was written by a white British scientist, I greatly appreciated the author’s intentional inclusion of the diverse history of human interaction with fungi and questioning of the universality of modern scientific thought. So many cool mushroom facts conveyed in a sensual, meandering tale.
