Re-reading in concert with the HBO series. Trying to keep in synch with the episodes for a 'Rashomon' kind of experience with the differences in the book/show.

“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”

“Game of Thrones” is the introduction to the A Song of Ice and Fire. An epic grimdark, historical fiction fantasy that’s easy and fast to read. We’re narrated to by various characters who were all interesting to follow.

When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.

‘Winter is Coming.’ These are the worlds of House Stark. The Great House in the North. Eddard Stark rules as lord but when his old friend and King of the Seven Kingdoms, Robert Baratheon of the House Baratheon, arrives at Winterfell, he is tasked with being the Hand of the King. His journey to King’s Landings with his daughters, who are also pov characters, Sansa and Arya, lands him into a conspiracy years in the making. Bran Stark’s journey to King’s Landing is forestalled when an ‘accident’ occurs. His near death injury leads his mother and matriarch of the house Catelyn on a journey to get revenge on those she believes are behind it.

I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

Jon Snow. Eddark Stark’s bastard and my favourite of the Stark family. To escape his meaningless life, he follows his uncle to the Wall to join the Night’s Watch. The men in black who have sworn their life to protect the Wall and keep everyone safe. Why is he my favourite? What can I say, I’m like Tyrion Lannister. I have a thing for cripples, bastards and broken things

Daenerys Targaryen is the youngest surviving child of King Aerys II, the Mad King who was killed during the rebellion led by Robert Baratheon. She’s lived in exile her whole life with her brother Viserys whose only dreams are to take back his rightful throne as the next heir. It is because of this that he marries her off to Khal Drogo, in exchange for an army. I can’t wait to see Dany in action. That ending has me psyched.

“Once you’ve accepted your flaws, no one can use them against you.”

Tyrion Freaking Lannister. This man served the whole book and served it well. I love smart characters. I love them so much and Tyrion Lannister is so far my favourite

I’m so lazy with reviews these days but this book was so good. I loved all the characters and the different houses. Martin had me rooting for all the houses. House Targaryen went mad and killed people? How awful but Dany is so loveable!! The Lannisters are backstabbing, ruthless, conniving and willing to murder children? That’s so hot of them. The Starks and their pack loyalty? Beautiful. I’m so excited for the next book.

“Bran thought about it. 'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?'
'That is the only time a man can be brave,' his father told him.”
