I think this book is essential to helping people understand and wrap their heads around war and life at its core. This was like nothing I have ever read before; from the way she explains the hunger gnawing at her, to the isolation, to the reliance on others you do not know, to the utter strength she had to live each day despite the horrors of that life in Berlin.

A Woman in Berlin is the devastating true account of one Berlin woman's life in the eight weeks after the city fell to the Russians. Fiercely honest, unblinking, powerful. An excellent contrast to the usual "man goes to war" war literature. Reading this requires a strong stomach.

This is a difficult one to get through but should be as widely read as the diary of Anne Frank. I can’t believe I’d never heard of this before. Harrowing

This is the most impressive and uncompromising account of dignity and agency in face of adversity I have ever encountered.
