this book broke me and then put me back together again. it was raw and personal and i felt like i was living life with Lauren. i love when novels are character driving, and Taylor Jenkins Reid knows how to do that perfectly

My first time reading one of TJR’s romance novels and ofc i loved it bc she can do no wrong. The concept of this book is really simple but it makes for such an impactful story. and really gives you something to reflect on regarding love and marriage. 4/5

Wow. Loved it, has some "all your perfects" by Colleen Hoover vibes!

Finished this in one day because I listened to the audiobook while deep cleaning my entire house and car. Also listened during a 6 mile run lol. Only read this because of the author. Good, but not great. Unconventional love story, interesting plot, very easy to follow/comprehend. Nothing I hated

TJR writes in a way that is so honest and real. I loved this. The audiobook was great!

Note: I’m married and don’t know if it would’ve been as impactful or I would’ve really understood if I was reading this as a single person? Hard to say.

Reread: January 2022
On a whim, I decided to reread this book today and to be honest, it hits a little different now that I'm married. Still loved it.

Original Read: March 2018
Well I managed to read another Taylor Jenkins Reid book in just a day and I loved it! One True Loves is still my favorite, but I really enjoyed this one.

This follows Lauren and Ryan. They've been together for 11 years, married for 6, and their marriage is falling apart. They've just stopped loving each other. To solve their marital troubles, they come up with a solution: Spend one year apart with absolutely no contact. Free to do whatever and whoever they want, they just cannot call or email or text each other. At the end of the year, they will decide if they want to stay together or get a divorce.

I have to admit that that plan seems crazy to me. But I'm not married and I never have been, so what do I know. I do know, however, that this book almost broke me in half. There were moments that were absolutely heartbreaking. TJR does a really good job of writing an impossible situation and turning it into something positive. It's why I love her books so much. Her books are so realistic that it's almost painful to read them, but in a good way.

I really loved the characters in this book. Both Lauren and Ryan were well fleshed-out and realistic. They're not particularly likeable at first, but they get there in the end. I also loved all the side characters. Lauren's family was amazing, her friends were amazing, just all the side characters were amazing. I loved the relationship she had with her family, especially her sister. And I liked that that played a huge role in this book. I liked Lauren's growth throughout the book.

I do wish that we'd been able to see from Ryan's perspective. We are able to kind of see how and what Ryan is doing (I won't say how for fear of spoilers), but I wanted more. I wanted to get to know Ryan more than just through Lauren's eyes and thoughts. One of my least favorite tropes in books is the characters' lack of communication skills. It feels like Lauren and Ryan could have solved their problems sooner if they'd just been able to communicate with each other. But TJR did this trope so fantastically that I couldn't help but love it.

I loved the ending and I loved how everything came together. I laughed, I cried, and I genuinely felt happy about this book. I'm also sad because I only have two Taylor Jenkins Reid books left and then I won't have anything more from her until next year. Overall, I loved this book. One True Loves is still my favorite, but this one is a close second. If you haven't picked up a TJR book yet, what are you doing her books are so good!
