Loved it! I think it's hilarious the fact that his name is also Gary, and in the Audible version you can absolutely tell he's the "Scottish Gary Vaynerchuck" and I'm sure I'm not the first one to see that. He's kicking ass and making you realize hard truths about your unwillingness to go after your goals and any procrastination through a stoic-inspired backbone. This read is definitely for the self-help books haters, the highly skeptical kind, and the ones not easily offended, that can take it hard core. It's not exclusive though, I feel like everybody can use and improve on some level with this book.

Life coach / personal development professional Bishop sets out a list of precepts that will, if practiced, supposedly unfuck you. They are:

  • I am willing

  • I am wired to win

  • I got this

  • I embrace uncertainty

  • I am not my thoughts: I am what I do

  • I am relentless

  • I expect nothing and accept everything

It's all very straightforward, but Johnson's use of example, self-deprecating wit, liberal curse words, and general Scottishness make it a worthwhile read/listen. They key thought threaded through everything that makes it all actionable is "You are not what you think. You are what you do." Worth owning a copy for multiple reads and references. Recommended for those who'd like a swift kick and don't mind a Scotsman yelling at them.

A dear friend let me borrow this when I found out my contract was nonrenewed. Good timing. Sometimes the little mantras and examples are what you need to get out of your head and back to work.

There are valuable things to take from this book but it’s nothing original. I also listened to this as an audiobook and this man has the most annoying voice I’ve ever heard, he really should have used someone else as the voiceover. His voice alone almost made me not want to finish it. I guess I would recommend if you’re truly in need of generic self-help advice, but avoid if your life is for the most part going well and definitely avoid the audiobook.

The title and the summary are super corny, its definitely the most "self-helpy" book I've read. But its essentially focuses on positive self-talk and taking action, which I really needed right now. Extra star for the audiobook and Scottish accent.
