Oh, my heart.
Loved this own voices story, I found it informative and heartwarming all at the same time.
Something of note that I wanted to point out is that this book talks candidly about getting braces, which I think is really cool for a middle grade book.
I being able to learn more about the native tribes in the area that I live, and how far we still have to come in honoring native voices in the Pacific North West.

This book tackles a painful era of US and Native American history in a way that doesn't shy away from the horrors of the past (the US government taking infants from Native American families via social services) without being too painful for a middle grade audience. It also explores friendship, and navigating unhealthy friendships. It was really fun to hear about the progress on the film festival animation. Overall, the ending felt really earned and uplifting without being reductive of the serious history.
📘The Gist 📘: While prepping for a film contest, a girl and her friends (one of which is an inconsiderate person and terrible friend) discover a box in the attic filled with photos of a relative the girl never knew about. The girl works on unraveling the mystery while navigating complicated friendship Dynamics and working on their contest entry.
