Emma Lynn is a Negro living in East St. Louis in the early 1900's. She lives with the Goodwin family, in their cellar. She makes baked goods and then works in their confectionary shop. Two of the Goodwins, Charles and Rebecca Jane, are very kind to Emma and treat her more like a friend than a servant or a maid. Things get complicated as Emma and the (white) milkman fall in love.

Good insight to the racial tension and strictures of the times. Plot predictable, although there were a few surprises. Characters stereotypical - only the Goodwin father seemed to really have any growth or development of his character. If you're looking for something about this topic but with better writing, try Flygirl by Sherri Smith.
