a very atmospheric read. poe writes beautifully! i have to read his completed collection sooner rather than later.
i liked the story - but as it was short i didn’t feel any greater connection to the characters. and i wouldn’t say it impacted me as a person (which would be needed for me to give the story a five stars).

3 stars ~ the writing was amazing as is all of Poe’s work and the story itself was an interesting one. However, I did feel as though it wasn’t a read that really gripped me and made me wish it was longer!

This story is packed full of atmosphere, mystery, and suspense. Poe’s dark yet beautiful prose blends this story's supernatural and psychological aspects seamlessly. Atmosphere is a 10 out of 10!

I wanted to read this after 1) watching the Netflix series and 2) reading T. Kingfisher’s retelling. I found a recording on YouTube of Christopher Lee reading it, which was nice. But since I had seen/read the other two first … there just wasn’t much story to this. It does leave me more impressed with T. Kingfisher’s version.
