This is one of those rare times I think the movie was actually better than the book. 😬 Had a hard time following as I read and I just wasn’t very invested. It was interesting to see how the book and movie differ
but I’m not sure I would’ve gone on to watch the movie if I had read the book first.

I expected this to be a hard read but boy oh boy did I not expect just how hard of a read it was going to be. The first time I tried reading this I gave up three chapters in because the violent descriptions and the talk of how to make homemade explosives gave me that weird phantom pain in my knees. But this time I pushed forward and got through the whole book. I love the movie, it’s one of my favourite movies. But it was far more difficult to actually be in the narrator’s head the way you are in a book versus how it is watching it in a movie.

Man some of this was really hard to swallow. I loved it though. It was so brutal but it felt incredibly authentic. My problem with a lot of books this brutal is inauthenticity. This was great.

We are not special.
We are not crap or trash, either.
We just are.
We just are, and what happens just happens.
And God says, “No, that’s not right.”
Yeah. Well. Whatever. You can’t teach God anything.
God asks me what I remember.
I remember everything.

A very gnarly read at times but the fast insomniac style prose was fun to read

First rule of Fight Club is you don’t talk about Fight Club! So I won’t đŸ€«â€Š (loved it though, made me chuckle a lot)

Palahniuk is one of my favorite authors, so returning to his works is like catching up with an old friend... Even if they weren't your favorite, they make you feel nostalgic.

Fight Club is clearly early in his career and the elements of his style are being experimented upon. While sometimes it hits his razor sharp mania, other times it feels very stream of consciousness as told by characters who just aren't always that interesting. Shock value is a trademark of his style but here it feels gratuitous, where in other books it feels immersive. Still, he makes his point, and his critique of capitalism and hyper masculinity is absolutely clear. If this is your first tango with Chuck, I'd recommend you start with Rant before checking out Fight Club, but don't count this one out entirely.
