4.75 stars rounding up to 5 for GoodReads. This debut blew me away! I didn't hear much from this one but I kept seeing good reviews and so I picked it up at the library. Now I feel like I need to get my hands on a physical copy. Anna is a fantastic character and I loved that the story followed her specifically. She felt like a real person without falling into the cliches of outsider high school girls. Every time she was bullied I wanted to wrap her in my arms and sequester her away from any negativity. Something I did not think would be in this novel was a supernatural element and when it was introduced I was ecstatic. I knew this was marketed as a horror novel but didn't want to get my hopes up because sometimes things marketed as horror are actually just thrillers. But this is definitely a horror novel and one where I think the blending in of horror elements is done really well. I also loved the native stories told within this story and thought Anna being in love with native stories was a great way to introduce them to the reader. The pacing was pretty spot on and when the novel got rolling, I did not want to put it down. It was a bit slow in the beginning but I appreciated the time it took to let the reader get to know the characters. I had to ding off a little and couldn't call this one a true five-star simply because of the actual writing prose. It was a bit on the nose sometimes and wasn't the cleanest, smoothest writing as it repeated a bit sometimes. But other than that I have nothing but positive things to say about this one.
The author's note at the end of the story is very informative and I urge everyone to read it after finishing the novel. Honestly, if you don't read the book at least read the author's note. It shines light on a harrowing reality that should not be ignored.
