Digging Up Love by Chandra Blumberg

slow-paced
This was not it for me. The conflicts seemed trivial but exaggerated, and nonsensical. Unfortunate. It was also hard to mesh with the main characters. & for some reason I couldn't always differentiate the side characters from each other (and sometimes from the main characters. My thoughts: "Like girl, who's talking right now?" "And who the hell is cait?" "Who the hell is meg?" It was a lot of that). I was listening to just the audio sometimes and that's when i was most confused.
& the romance didn't do what I wanted it to do.
Plus, it felt slow and long. This isn't even a long book. 🤷🏾

Contemporary adult romance.  Alisha lives in a small town called Hawksburg, Illinois.  She lives with her grandparents, working at their barbecue restaurant.  She dreams of opening her own cookie bakery in Chicago, but something always seems to come up and she doesn't feel she can leave her grandparents.  But when her grandparents' pool installation is interrupted by the discovery of possible fossils in the yard, things start to change.

Quentin is a paleontology professor at a Chicago university.  When he gets the call that there might be fossils in a small town a few hours away, he is doubtful.  But upon investigation it turns out that this might be the career break he has needed.  The granddaughter of the property owners is a welcome surprise but he can't be derailed from his work.

I loved Alisha and Quentin's relationship.  They truly brought out the best in each other and their banter was so cute.  This is a sweet romance, with nothing more than kissing going on.  I also liked the dynamics of the family and the small town and was so excited to see there is another book out featuring Alisha's sister.

A cute romance novel with two bipoc characters and a rounded out cast. No spice on this one which is was fine for me. My only concern with this is that this was a little too long and there was a lot more angst / miscommunication. Alisha kept making these excuses pushing herself away from relationships  and we never really know why Quentin & his ex never made it to the altar. I also wish powerlifting had been more integral to Alisha’s storyline because I feel like that was randomly inserted but unsure as to why.

It was ok, but I hate hand-wringing and this book had a lot of it.

2.5 read rounded up to a 3 because I liked the premise of a POC-centric romance and enjoyed the sweetness (lol) of their interactions. Echoing other reviews by saying the lack of communication was a big turn-off, as was the (always! last! minute!) angst that made the wrap up feel too perfect.

Bland!

I struggled so much with this book. It was packed with unnecessary, barely believable angst. This couple was so whiny and insecure. The backdrop of the lily white Midwest town was very underwhelming for me. The whole story was desperately in need of some flavor. It was too bland for my liking. I kept pushing because I thought there was a cute romance novel buried in there. It never got any better. They whined and acted like fools until the last few pages. I won’t even waste my time with the next book in the series.
