I wanted to like this book. I loved three of this author’s previous novels. But I just did not like this one. The short chapters and jumping back and forth in time made the book feel choppy to me, and I had a hard time feeling a connection to any of the characters, even Mrs. Touchet. Every time I thought I saw a glimpse of something interesting, the chapter ended and we jumped off to another time and place. The overall effect was to make the book tremendously ponderous and boring. Even the settings and the historical context of the Tichborne claimant trial were made boring when the momentum was drained from them. Some of the sentences were nice, though.
