Relentlessly jocular, lacks anything that could really be called emotionally compelling.

A nice summary of the beginning and end of Journey to the West, but a lot of the actual journey was cut out. Still gets the idea across and retains the original's charm!

I did not realise this was abridged until half way through and to be honest much as i love the story of Monkey this was about the right amount for me. I do not think i could have made it through the 4 volumes of the unabridged book.

I think some of the pieces left out makes this translated version a bit disjointed, hence 3 stars. Read this one for my World Lit class, but would have likely read it sooner or later anyway. I love classic epic stories.
