Very well-written and illustrated graphic novel.
I didn't really know anything much about Highsmith before except I'd seen that Carol movie. I wonder if she'd have been a better person if she lived in more affirming times. I kinda think not, but at least she would have lived in times more accepting of flawed women.

I absolutely loved this!! The art is absolutely gorgeous, the writing is concise and engaging, and overall this book provides an interesting snapshot of the life of a woman with a complicated legacy. (Although I honestly think the writers might have been too kind regarding just how antisemitic she was.) Patricia Highsmith was not a kind or good person. The Price of Salt is a pivotal piece of lesbian history. Both things can be true at the same time, and this book encourages the reader to sit in the uncomfortable space between. Again, cannot stress enough how beautiful the art is, and as a person who loves lesbian history and culture, this was a wonderful read that I would absolutely pick up again.

Phenomenal storytelling, especially visual storytelling. I am in awe of how Ellis and Templer crafted such a compelling story about such a terrible human being, while also showing how vital High smith's work was to so many people.
Do NOT skip the introduction, it's vital for understanding what they're doing and why it matters. Because it does. And, terrible person though she was, Highsmith mattered too.
Really top notch writing and art.

Flung Out of Space is a comic book about novelist and comic book writer, Patricia Highsmith. Highsmith was famous for writing Strangers on a Train, the psychological thriller that got turned into a fan loved movie of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock. After writing Strangers on a Train, Highsmith wrote The Price of Salt, which is a book about lesbians that has a happy ending. This was very uncharacteristic for books around the time (1950s).
Highsmith was a not a good person and the author and illustrator let us know in a forward at the beginning of the comic. Highsmith often hit on and cheated with her co-workers female partners, was an out a proud racist, and she was just down right rude to people she interacted with. I think Highsmith portrayal was a bit sanitized, I know that Highsmith was a racist up until her dead. She's quoted as saying some honestly horrifying things about Hitler and Jewish people.
I love period pieces and that includes the comic medium. It was interesting to see Highsmith navigate life as a lesbian in 1950's America. Some parts made me feel bad for her, like the parts where Then I remembered that she wasn't really a good person and she was a racist and misogynist so I now I struggle to feel bad for her but I kind of still do.
I really loved the art, it was nice to look at. I enjoyed the information value and the nice aesthetics that this comic has.
