I went to Arizona this summer with my family, and we happened to stop by Frank Lloyd Wright's residence/artist community there - Taliesin West. I don't know why I had never been interested in his work previous to that hot August afternoon, but maybe it's a combination of living in a city that has a large percentage of bungalows in it has a population that is interested in design & architecture...maybe? But I was deeply moved by what I saw and when I came across this book, I was even more intrigued.

Turns out that Frank Lloyd Wright found his soul mate in feminist/writer/translator Mamah Bothwick, a client of his in Oak Park, Ill. This book is a piece of historical fiction - based on newspaper clippings, a few letters and general research about Bothwick & Lloyd Wright's.

I began this book interested in Lloyd Wright's story, but soon became much more invested in Mamah and the novel's take on love, feminism and cultural ideas.

Wow - that was fairly intense. I was wary about reading a fictional account of an actual relationship. We will never know what happened as fully as it was explained in the book, but it was certainly interesting reading.I really didn't know much about Wright's personal life before reading this book except what I learned from a tour of his home in Oak Park and it was quite intriguing to see the account from this perspective.

All I can say is that the end of this book is disturbing and haunting.

I rated the book three stars because I thought the writing was well done; however I really didn't like either of the main characters, or even many of the minor characters. It was however, a poignant look at how society viewed divorce at the time, and how a difficult situation like the end of a marriage was made so much worse by those prevailing attitudes.

I really liked the beginning and end of this book, but there was a part in the middle that I thought was boring. Other than that I really enjoyed it!

God. This book is A LOT. Honestly, Frank and Mamah are really pieces of work. I think the book did a really good job of showing them as people, I loved how the author was able to show both of their flaws and how they were as people. Im not gonna say much more because I spent like the whole school term analyzing this book even though I could say much more. I just don’t care or want to tbh.
